Christmas celebrations in Beijing

Colombo, 20 December, (Asiantribune.com): As a means of spreading peace and harmony among the communities, the Embassy together with the Sri Lanka community organized Christmas celebrations in Beijing on 7th December 2008, in the Embassy premises. The event was attended by a very distinguished gathering of the diplomatic corp, friends of Sri Lanka in China and the resident Sri Lanka community totaling approx 200 guests.

Celebrations began with religious observances conducted by a catholic priest, which was followed by the lighting of the Christmas tree by the Ambassador. He reiterated in his speech that Sri Lanka being a multi-ethnic and a multi- religious society, it was necessary to recognize events of importance, inculcating in the minds of the people an idea of togetherness and unity. He appreciated the presence of a large gathering which added glamour to the celebrations and helped to spread the seasonal cheers.

A professional choir conducted Christmas carols joined by the Embassy Staff and the guests in attendance adding a happy melody to the evening. Christmas cake was served with many prices and surprises in store. Hampers were given away and many other raffles were drawn as the evening unfolded with contributions being made towards charity. SriLankan Airlines came forward in gifting a free ticket for the winner to travel to Sri Lanka. The children were surprised by an early visit of Santa Clause, with many goodies and gifts which delighted them all.

A very sumptuous buffet with spice infused Sri Lanka food was laid out to the visitors to enjoy at the end of a very enjoyable and lustrous evening.
