Narcotics worth Rs. 54 crores seized

Chennai, 24 December, (Asiantribune.com): Narcotics and psychotropic substances to the tune of Rs 54 crore were seized from various districts of the State and destroyed by the Destruction Committee in Thenmelpakkam Village in Kancheepuram district. This is said to be one of the highest quantity of contraband destroyed in the last five years.

The overall seizure of 4,154.917 kg and 13,098 vials were effected in connection with 3,037 cases this year. The substances included dry ganja (307 cases) 3,789 kg worth Rs 1.89 crore, cocaine (one case), 15,400 kg valued at Rs 15.40 crore, heroin (17 cases) worth Rs 36.52 crore, opium (2 cases), 314 kg worth Rs 78.50 lakh, Buprinorphine injection (10 cases), 13,098 vials worth Rs 13.09 lakh.

S Arunachalam, DIG, Narcotic Intelligence Bureau-CID (NIB-CID), said, "this one of the highest destruction during the last five years and it was done in a private firm in Kancheepuram district."

The seizure was mainly from Chennai, Madurai, Salem, Dindigul, Theni, Vellore, Ramnathapuram, Nagapattinam, Sivaganga, Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari.

The international value of the narcotics and psychotropic substances was approximately Rs 54.72 crore, he said.

He said, "After the disposal of cases and the expiry of appeal period, the Trial Courts used to order the destruction of narcotics drugs and psychotropic substances in the cases detected by NIB-CID. As per the guidelines issued by Central and State Government a destruction committee was constituted by the Commissioner of Prohibition and Excise."

The committee was formed on 17 December to destroy the contraband involved in 3,037 cases today. The committee is headed by Deputy Commissioner of Excise, Additional Superintendent of Police, NIB-CID, and Assistant Commissioner of Excise, Kancheepuram, and Assistant Director of Forensic Laboratory.
