M.Karunanidhi - Re-elected as DMK president 10 years in a row

By Ravikumar Balakrishnan on Chennai

Chennai, 28 December, (Asiantribune.com): The General Council meeting of the DMK unanimously elected M Karunanidhi as party president for the 10th consecutive time. Announcing Karunanidhi's unanimous election, party election officer G M Shah, said 41 sets of nominations proposed by district secretaries were filed on his behalf.

The ruling DMK recently completed its 13th organizational polls, right from village level and elected district-level office bearers. The newly elected general council members, numbering over 1,900 and district level office bearers will constitute the general council and will be in office for the next five years.

M K Stalin was also elected unanimously as party treasurer, a step higher in the ladder of the party hierarchy. K Anbazhagan, Finanace Minister and the Chief Minister’s close aide, was re-elected General Secretary for the eighth time in a row.

Speaking on the occasion, Karunanidhi urged Stalin to function effectively in the new post, and add value to it.'It was our party founder Anna’s dream to set up 1000 branch offices all over Tamil Nadu. You should fulfill it. The DMK and its members will help you achieve this goal,' he said. The Chief Minister further added books and cotton handloom fabric should be used in the place of silk to honor guests.

The Chief Minister took the opportunity to address the Sri Lankan Tamils issue. He said that while it was of utmost importance to arrive at an amicable solution, the party was never interested in employing violence and unpatriotic means at any stage to achieve that end. He requested the central government in all sincerity to act promptly without further delay. He regretted that a few misinterpreted his love for the Lankan Tamils as loyalty towards banned outfits.

An emotional Karunanidhi said that he and his party are ready to sacrifice their lives for the cause. Later the Chief Minister appointed Arcot Veerasamy as Chief Secretary. Earlier Arcot Veerasamy held the post of Treasurer.

Durai Murugan, Parutti Ilamvazhuthi and Satguna Pandian were appointed as Deputy General Secretaries.

Further, the Chief Minister announced that Kasinathan, Kuzhandaivelu, Balaraman and Suba Seetharaman were elected as Audit Committee members.

Earlier in his address, Anbazhagan said a high level executive committee would be set up soon to manage party affairs. Stating that the intra party polls were held abiding by the rules and regulations of the Election Commission, he said eligible candidates were appointed to appropriate posts.

It is surprising that Madurai based M K Azhagiri, who has been in the news and gaining importance lately in the party, has not been given any post, a decision which may disappoint his supporters.

Thanksgiving speech by the newly elected executives marked the close of the General Council meeting of the DMK.
