Sri Lanka President condemns the killing of Lasantha Wickramatunga

Colombo, 08 January, (Asiantribune.com): Sri Lanka President has condemned the killing of Lasantha Wickramatunga, Editor of The Sunday Leader, which took place today.

In a statement President Mahinda Rajapakse pointed out that "This heinous crime points to the grave dangers faced by the democratic social order of our country, and the existence of forces that will go to the furthest extremes in using terror and criminality to damage our social fabric and bring disrepute to the country."

He further said that the Police has been directed to conduct the most thorough investigation to bring to book any and all persons responsible for this act of brutality, with maximum speed.

Given below the full text of the statement of Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapakse on the murder of Lasantha Wickramatunga, Editor of The Sunday Leader :

"My government and I most vehemently and unequivocally condemn the murder of Mr. Lasantha Wickramatunga, Editor of The Sunday Leader, which took place today.

"I am both grieved and shocked by his tragic death as Mr. Wickramatunga was a close friend of mine who I have known for many years as a courageous journalist.

"This heinous crime points to the grave dangers faced by the democratic social order of our country, and the existence of forces that will go to the furthest extremes in using terror and criminality to damage our social fabric and bring disrepute to the country. It is significant that such an attack was carried out at a time when the country is gaining repeated victories over the forces of terrorism, in our efforts to establish freedom and democracy throughout the country.

"I have directed the Police to conduct the most thorough investigation to bring to book any and all persons responsible for this act of brutality, with maximum speed.

"On this sad occasion I extend my deepest sympathies to the members of the family of the late Mr. Wickramatunga, to all his colleagues in The Sunday Leader and associated newspapers, and in the profession of journalism.

Despite grave threats of this nature, my government reiterates its commitment to upholding the principles of Media Freedom and Freedom of Expression, even under the most trying circumstances, as we have witnessed today."

Killing journalists is not

Killing journalists is not the way to stifle dissent whoever who wished to silence the outspoken Mr Lasantha Wickrematunga. While no accusation is being made about the President or his ministers or government as having anything to do with this terrible crime, it has to be said that responsibility for maintaining law and order in the country is the responsibility of the government of the day. We have witnessed too many incidents of thuggery where some ministers like Mervyn Silva have been directly involved, and nothing has been done by the authorities. The culture of thuggery and intimidation is not part of a vibrant democracy or a country that has such a rich Buddhist heritage, and Sri Lanka seems to have an increasing rate of such unsavoury practices making our country seem like Chicago during Al Capone's time

Loss to his family and ???

Loss to his family and ??? You know who?,

But no loss to Mother Lanka. He has never been a patriotic son of the soil.

When patriotic soldiers die to save the country while fighting a ruthless terrorist who is going to divide this beautiful nation, no one feel sad about this mans death who contributed to the separatist elements.

UNP will point their finger towards the ruling party or the armed forces. but I have a strong feeling that this was organised by UNP along with Sirasa attack to disrepute the government.

It must be the job of Ran-nil master and the clan.

I cannot believe a comment

I cannot believe a comment about Lasantha Wickramathunge painted as an outspoken critic. He was outspoken only on the present government. He was silent and encouraged previous UNP regimes to run riot on people’s freedom including Batalanda. He did not have anything to say when JRJ got resignation letters from duly elected MPs of his government to keep those MPs as a herd for his petty gains. He did not see Ravi Karunanayake as a joker, or Ranil Wickramsinghe as a stooge. He did not see Managala Samaraweera as a clown. He did not see Jayalath Jayawardana as a puppet of LTTE. He was dabbling with dangerous politics in Sri Lanka. He survived so long only because he lived in Colombo and criticized the democratically elected government. He would have been eliminated by the very forces he supported much earlier if he lived in Jaffna and was critical to LTTE.

This killing is totally

This killing is totally unacceptable. It is the collaboration of sinister forces who are set out to destroy the country that are doing this, whether pro-Govt., or anti-Govt. There are innuendoes that this is done by government goons, and Mervyn Silva being free does not help,.
But the Govt. does not have to resort to this kind of senseless killing as the support of the people is assured.
One cannot however dismiss the possibility of Anti-government forces who are quite capable of vicious and brutal acts getting down to a new tack of using the media for getting international attention back on Sri Lanka, now that the military actions in the North are being successful.

The Police had better find the perpetrators FAST...if their credibility for law enforcement is to survive. Otherwise, watch the news as the attacks on the media increase and the International Community swoops on this breakdown of democracy in order to 'intervene' in Sri Lanka

Whoever has done this is disgracing the country, and has no qualms about it. So look for the people who have the most to gain in political power by this brutal act. If the govt. is innocent it is in their interest to quickly find the perpetrators and expose them.

There is something very

There is something very fishy about the killing of Sunday Leader Editor Lasantha Wickrematunga and the arson attack on the MTV Broadcasting Station. Both incidents occurred within few days after the fall of Kilinochchi to Sri Lankan Forces.

The government should forthwith launch a thorough inquiry into both cases and leave no stones unturned since the offences are bound to reflect negatively on the Rajapaksa regime although the Leader Publications and MTV/ Sirasa were both operating exclusively as UNP media organs and showing veiled sympathy for the LTTE cause.

There’s a pithy Sinhala saying that fools who are angry with their faces try to cut off their noses (moonath ekka tharahata nahaya kapagannawa). Such was the media policy of the Leader Publications and MTV / Sirasa. Merely because they hated the Rajapaksa regime they did not mind indirectly serving the Tiger agenda. It is a small wonder that most readers and viewers who have been addicted to the news reporting of these two media organizations think that Sri Lanka’s real enemy is not the LTTE (which has been trying to bisect this island for the past 30 years) but the Rajapaksa government which has been in power for only three years.

Clearly both criminal acts were aimed at diverting the world’s attention from the devastating blow dealt to the LTTE by Sri Lankan troops. Obviously no sane government would resort to any action that would tarnish its image at the height of a resounding military victory.

If however the opposite had happened – a humiliating defeat for the Sri Lankan Army in the Wanni – we may assume that certain frustrated elements justifiably angered by the anti-national stance of the victims would have perhaps committed the offences. But why should it happen now?

Who would benefit by casting a shadow over the success that our soldiers have achieved in the Wanni? Needless to say, the only ones who stand to gain are not only the LTTE, sections of the UNP and the NGO ‘peaceniks’ but also the so-called international community which has been conspiring to impose its own ‘political solutions’ on this country.

Though I am not a reader of

Though I am not a reader of any Leader Publications, I was really saddened by the assassination of the young editor Lasantha Wickramatunga. The brutality of his murder shows to what extent we have lost respect for human life. What satisfaction has the killers got from the cowardly brutality used on the person of the Editor ?

It was still more sad to read the reports of his death in Transcurrent, which accuses the President without actually naming him. So does the Times online. It is the absurdity of twisted reporting that makes people angry. The “great” anger has no limit, it could make a beast of a man.

Therefore, in writing one has to be careful not to blame any one with out having clear evidence. The fact that the late Mr.Wickramatunga was writing against the government does not necessarily mean that the government was responsible for his killing.

The danger of such accusation is that the investigators may be led astray making the real killers get away undetected. It has become a habit to accuse the government every time some one is killed, some place has been valdalised as in the case of Sirasa, or some one abducted in a White Van.

This has to stop. At least when we are announcing the brutal killing of a young man, we should have the politeness not to mix the feeling of hatred touch the man who had died. That does not speak well of the writer, nor is it being respectful to the dead.

This should be a lesson to other editors too, criticism of government is some times taken far too excessively. Everyone knows that the President is doing an excellent job, even if one does not accept his politics, and there is no reason for him or the Commander of the Army or the Defence secretary to send killer squads to every one that writes against them.

The Leader news papers were going too far with their criticism of the Government. And the Leader news papers were not respectful and did not follow respectable journalistic ethics. It is alright if the Leader news papers were supporting Ranil Wickramasinghe, but it some times turns to those it criticised before, in order to attack the President or his government. He had made many enemies. A news paper editor should be more objective in writing.

May the killers be found and punished,

Our deep sympathies to the Family of the late Mr. Lasantha Wickramatunga.

May he attain Nibbana

This senseless killing is

This senseless killing is clearly the work of extremist Sinhalese thugs emboldened by recent military victories in the north and who have elected to take things into their own hands. The government must take immediate and decisive steps to contain the rapidly growing Sinhalese national fervor by nipping it in the bud before anarchy sets-in with another 1983 like pogrom. Though celebration of the military accomplishments mostly by the Sinhalese masses is quite natural, resorting to brutal murder to avenge dissenting voices should not be condoned but condemned in the strongest possible words and the perpetrators brought to justice. Over a year ago this commentator predicted on these very AT threads that a military victory by government forces without first spelling out the contours of a political solution will embolden the Sinhalese nationalists to such an extreme level making the evolution of a just solution politically impossible. Regrettably, this prediction appears to be coming to fruition.

All right thinking good Sinhalese people must be vigilant about the gathering winds of national fervor and not let these potentially dangerous forces sway our innate sense of justice and fairness towards the minorities or those who may not agree with our views. This is a ripe opportunity for the Sinhalese to demonstrate their Buddhist values of tolerance and fairness and also an opportunity for the administration to demonstrate its capacity for true statesmanship and integrity.

My deepest condolences to the family of Mr. Wickrematunga.

The statement in one

The statement in one commentator's write up:

"This senseless killing is clearly the work of extremist Sinhalese thugs emboldened by recent military victories in the north and who have elected to take things into their own hands."

Can this kind of racist comment come from anyone OTHER than a completely biased person? It is unacceptable that so-called intelligent people make this kind of conclusive comment, without any evidence having been presented.
These comments are as extremist as those of the thugs they claim to oppose.

There is more to all this

There is more to all this than meets the eye. When the the Editor of an English language weekly was kidnapped recently in Colombo, according to news reports, shortly after a frantic call to Prez Rajapakse, the badly beaten Editor was let go. This could have been a coincidence, of course, but the facts speak for themselves. In Pakistan, it is well known that certain elements in the military support extremist groups. The GoSL has to look into whether this is the case in Sri Lanka, too. The facts continue to point in that direction.

Furthermore to suggest that Sinhalese nationalist fervor over the military successes will generate a 1983-type backlash at this time is mischievous and complete balderdash. Although the LTTE have attempted to provoke a backlash through terror acts in the South ever since the military routed it at Thoppigala, they have failed miserably. There were other political groups cheering the LTTE in the sidelines who also hoped for that backlash, but it did not come. The LTTE will no doubt continue to provoke a backlash especially now that it is cornered. It probably will be ably assisted by supporters of varying political stripes in the South.
It might do well to remember history, and which political group 'arranged' for the backlash in the South in July 1983.

Murder is murder and has to

Murder is murder and has to be condemned. However, one has to ask who has to gain from such incidents at this juncture when the GSL is winning a war against terror.
Actions of the likes of Mervyn Silva may be further used to sling mud at the Government (as I recall he was charged and sentenced in the courts).
I have warned before that the LTTE will assassinate its supporters (overt or covert) as a part of its desperate strategy. GSL/security forces should endeavor to provide protection to the likes of Mano Ganeshan right now.

It is said that Tamilnet had printed an article about LW just prior to his death. This pattern has been noted in the past just prior to spectacular deaths of people in public eye who opposed the Government and yet were not clear (overt) LTTE supporters.

I suggest that GSL should be regularly scanning Tamilnet.

There are too many criminal

There are too many criminal acts. They were mostly started by LTTE gangs who started to kill Alfred Duraiappa in 1975 followed by lamp post killings in Jaffna and then on to killing Tamil politicians and spreading to Wellawatte area and then to many other parts, mostly happening around Colombo. It is well known that LTTE started the motorcycle killings.

Criminals amongst Sinhalese and other oppotunists too now use this tactics. Who carried out this killing is still to be determined.

It is the GOSL that has to take action to stop this and the work in now in progress to destroy terrorism. These acts of killing are a part of terrorism. When LTTE terrorism is destroyed, some of the resources like police and armed forces can be assigned to enforce law and order.

It is a long road now. It took from 1975 to 2008 to go into such low levels and it could take another decade to get back to normal, if all Sri lankans are lucky.

We need the support of all community leaders and do not expect the GOSL to do it alone. There are criminal gangs in evey community and in every party. Hope the community leaders take leadership to eliminate this type of crimes.

Everybody has the right to

Everybody has the right to their own ideas and opinion. Mr Lasantha has (had) his rights and I have mine and everybody who writes in this forum has his/hers. If one cannot voice his opinion in his country then there is no democracy. Now the people in South also feel like they are living under Prabhakaran under whom there is no freedom of personal opinion and speech. People must learn to accept criticism of whatever degree in a democratic society. This country is now losing the trend.
