Karunanidhi’s "Save Tamil Race Show" in Chennai, VCK clarifies, Sedition case against Vaiko

New Delhi, 10 April (Asiantribune.com): Leading a massive rally to ‘Save Tamil Race’ in Chennai, DMK chief Karunanidhi Thursday asked Sri Lanka President to stop the war in Vanni and told Congress president Sonia Gandhi to ‘intervene to end the genocide of Tamils’ in the island nation. He also called for a dignified treatment to Prabhakaran, saying the Tiger’s chief should treated ‘like Alexander treated Porus’ in the battle.
Karunanidhi said he was not making the request to President Rajapaksa for the sake of an individual. ‘I am not asking this for an individual Prabakaran. It is for the sake of all Tamils’, he said. “If President Rajapaksa was thinking of killing all Tamils in Sri Lanka, then he should be aware that history would not forgive him. All who had presided over ethnic cleansing had been consigned to the dustbin of history”, the DMK supremo observed.
Remarking that most nations had condemned the action against civilians and wanted the war to be stopped, he regretted that Colombo had not heeded any of these voices and was pressing ahead with the war. President Pratibha Patil, Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Foreign Minister Pranab Mukherjee and many other leaders have called for equal rights for Tamils and their participation in government.
Leaders and cadres of Congress, the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, Dravidar Kazhagam and the Indian Union Muslim League also participated in the rally, raising slogans against the Sri Lankan government. They demanded an immediate stop to the killing of Tamils in the country and warned that Tamils elsewhere would not remain silent spectators while Sri Lankan Tamils were being killed.
DMK senior K.Anbazhagan said the rally was to make the Centre aware of the strong feelings of Tamils in India so that the Centre took appropriate action to halt the war. War was not a solution to the problems facing the island nation.
VCK Clarifies: We will work for Cong success too
VCK president Thol. Thirumavalavan has clarified that his party will work for the success of the Congress candidates as well. ‘Both the Congress and the VCK have to bury their bitter experiences and uphold the alliance dharma’.
‘The VCK feels that the foremost duty is to protect the interests of every party in the alliance in which it is a partner. It will leave aside the bitter experiences of the past,’ he said in a statement in the wake of reports that VCK will not campaign for the Congress.
He said the VCK would work for the victory of the DMK alliance in all the 40 Lok Sabha constituencies in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
Denying the report that his party would not campaign for the Congress, Thirumavalavan said if the political parties were guided solely by their ideology in forming alliances, no party could enter into an alliance with any party. He added both the Congress and the VCK have to uphold the alliance dharma.
‘It is against political decency to secretly undermine the interests of the alliance partner and the VCK will never resort to it. But it will never give up its ideology for the sake of alliance,’ he explained. Tracing the genesis of the controversy, he said a reporter asked whether he would campaign for the Congress and he had said he would not campaign against the Congress. ‘But my reply has been distorted,’ he alleged and asked the VCK men not to get carried away by such reports.
Vaiko Faces Sedition Case
Chennai City police have registered a sedition case against MDMK general secretary Vaiko for his speech warning that India would not remain one country if the war against the LTTE in Sri Lanka was not stopped, says a local media dispatch.
The case has been registered under 13 (1) b of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Amendment Act, 2004 (advocating, abetting, advising or inciting the commission of any unlawful activity) and also under Section 124 -A and Section 505 (1) (b) of the Indian Penal Code.
Section 124-A relates to sedition (attempting to bring into hatred or contempt or exciting or attempting to excite disaffection towards the Government established by law in India).
Section 505 (1) (b) relates to statements conducing to public mischief (making statement with intent to cause fear or alarm to the public whereby any person may be induced to commit an offence against the State or against the public tranquility).
Explaining the reasons for slapping the case, Police officials said Vaiko had not only spoken in support of the banned Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, he had also eulogized its leader V. Prabakaran, a proclaimed offender in India. Besides, he had spoken against national unity, integrity and sovereignty.

No Sri Lankan leader, despite whatever their shortcomings, has ever engaged in anythng remotely like trying to eliminate the Tamil race. We all know that Indian elections are round the corner, so all those who live in their shells have to ocme out and utter even incoherent rubbish. What is this hypocrite thinking? Why Prbhakaran to be treated this way. Why does not Mr. Karunanidhi ask for same treatment for Bin Laden and Al-swari. Some day one of these terrorists kill Mr. Karunanidhi perhaps we can consider this request. But Mr. Prbhakaran has been responsible for so many killings. He should be treated as a common criminal and sentenced to death. He has not alleviated the sufferings of Tamil people. Sri Lanka's total population is approximately 20 million (including Tamils). There are over 200 million Tamils in Tamil Nadu alone, if I know correctly. So if Karunanidi wishes to do something for the Tamils why doesn't he pressurise the Indian government to allow an independent/autonomous Tamil homeland in Tamil Nadu. Let his "save the Tamil Race Show" be staged for that.

We have our own quota of mad politicians in Sri Lanka,but this mob in Tamil Nadu take the price easily from our maddos.We are at a loss to understand how people like Mr Karunanidhi could run a multi billion dollar economy such as T/N state economy whilst displaying so little common sense.Is speaking the truth a disqualification for elections to high office in T/N.If this is the case then we will have to pardon him because he has to compete with the others of his kind.The behaviour of the T/N politicians in this whole saga is disgraceful to say the least because we in Sri Lanka know that these leaders do not care a damn for the Tamil people in Sri Lanka.The pantomime will go on until their election is over.It is obvious from readers comments to articles in Indian papers that the people are disgusted with T/N politicians stand on Sri Lanka.It must be gainsaid that Mr Karunanidhi seems to be best out of the bad lot.
