Operation Final Countdown to Rescue Tapped Tamil Civilians

By Ruwan Weerakone in Colombo

Colombo, 11 April, ( The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) is the only terrorist organization in the world to have possessed land, sea and air fighting capabilities, as well as a conventional ground attack force complete with heavy artillery, battle tanks, mortar launchers and the now prominent suicide bombers. World most ruthless and dangerous Terrorist Organization.

The LTTE, which came into being some 30 years ago, grew to be the most ruthless and world’s prominent outfit. It financial strength was the Tamil Diaspora which generously funded it billions of dollars. But with the military re-taking most of the territory held by the Tamil Tigers, the development effected in the areas has found to be minimal. The only visible development has been the LTTE’s infrastructure and fighting capabilities.

The Sri Lanka Army under Lt. Gen. Sarath Fonseka, ably assisted by the Sri Lanka Air Force, Navy and the Police together with the nation’s defence secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, have within a period of a little more than two years, almost completely routed this terrorist organization.

In this battle 90% involved Sri Lanka Army and Army Commander Lt General Sarath Fonseka has Implemented effective Military Strategy and tactics to eradicate Terrorism in Sri Lanka within Two years. Officers and Soldiers are committed and dedicated for their mission

The LTTE is now boxed in the 17 sq.kms of land area designated by the government as a safe area for civilians. And now the final countdown to rescue the civilians by separating them from the Tigers has begun.

The Sri Lankan Army today (Apr. 10) launched a massive humanitarian operation – the first of its kind anywhere in the world – to rescue the thousands civilians held hostage as human shields within the approximately 17 square kilometre sliver of land declared by the government as a ‘No Fire Zone’ (NFZ) for civilians in the north-east of the island.

A high-ranking military official told Asian Tribune that troops from the island nation army’s 53 division and Task force VIII are even now marching towards the NFZ along the A-35 road southwards to the Puthumathaalan area.

Sri Lanka Army One of Senior Officer said that we do have specially trained officers and soldiers this kind of mission there for we don’t have any problem without harm civilians we will liberate Civilians and destroyed LTTE

The senior officer said they had been strictly instructed by the Sri Lankan Army Commander Lt. Gen. Sarath Fonseka that no harm should befall the civilians to be rescued in this operation from the clutches of the separatist Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). As a result, the officers and soldiers are taking utmost precautions to minimize any harm to civilians, the officer added.

The second target of this Operation Final Countdown, the senior officer said, are LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran, his deputy and intelligence leader Pottu Amman, his deputy Kapil Amman, the LTTE military intelligence head Ratnam Master and the last of the battle-hardened leader Vellevan.

According to informed sources, LTTE leader Prabhakaran delegated the tasks of the fighting to battle-hardened Vellavan. Meanwhile, intercepted LTTE transmissions clearly indicate that the Tiger cadres are thoroughly demoralized by now.

LTTE leader V. Prabhakaran is now encircled in the approximately 17 sq. km. No Fire Zone and is said to be taking cover among the civilians. But the coming days will be crucial to him while the government forces severely restrict his movements.

The question arises whether he will be killed by the government’s security forces. The possible scenarios are:

If the military kill Prabhakaran in battle, then it will herald the collapse of the LTTE. Intelligence sources say that the LTTE being a centralized organization, his death will cause an implosion of the outfit.

The next will be for Pottu Amman, who acts as the No. 2 or deputy leader in the terrorist outfit, to take over command. But again observers point out that he may not prove to be as effective as Prabhakaran and may not conduct the organization the way the leader did.

In the event that both Prabhakaran and Pottu Amman are killed or die, then the LTTE will surely face death with them, said these observers. Prabhakaran’s death may occur either ways, he will be killed by the military or by his own men who may want to live another day, military sources predict. As Prabhakaran, branded as the most ruthless terrorist leader in the world, is no ordinary man where wealth is concerned, he may not want to commit suicide or be killed and leave his multi-million dollars worth of assets to someone else, sources say.

According to sources, the LTTE’s assets are divided into two main segments. One segment is operated by Kumaran Pathmanadan alias K.P for procurement purposes. The remaining segment is said to be directly operated by V. Prabhakaran himself. This segment includes assets in foreign banks and Prabhakaran is said to be very familiar with internet banking.

The same sources point out that it is very unlikely that Prabhakaran will commit suicide and leave all LTTE assets in the hands of K.P, thus making the Tiger leader’s wife and three children destitute.

Meanwhile, the coming days will be very crucial to V. Prabhakaran, Pottu Amman, Kapil Amman, Ratnam Master and Vellavan among others. Knowing this very well, the remaining Tiger propagandists are churning out e-mails by the thousands to countries like Norway, Germany, the USA and UK, France, Canada, South India and Australia.

The crux of these messages, point out intelligence sources, is the appeal to those influential LTTE sympathizers to pressurize the governments of those countries to intervene and pressurize the Sri Lankan government to agree to a ceasefire. The e-mails also state that if Prabhakaran dies, the dream of a separate state of Tamil Eelam too would die, and appeals to the Tamil diaspora to organize protests in several countries. The USA based LTTE legal personality is said to have attempted to make a last minute attempt to influence the UN Security Council too to censure Sri Lanka and intervene directly to bring about a stoppage of the ongoing fighting.

This tactic seems to be working partly, say observers, pointing out to the protests being held in London, Oslo, Paris etc. and also the pressure being exerted on the ruling Congress in India. They also say that most of those protestors forget that the LTTE is holding more than 50,000 civilians hostage in the NFZ and are killing those who attempt to flee it hold. Civilians who have been lucky to arrive unharmed into government controlled areas have told the military of severe punishments meted out to those apprehended while attempting to escape. Several have been shot and killed by the Tiger cadres, irrespective age, gender or position, they say.

Meanwhile, more troops are being inducted into this first ever major humanitarian operation of its kind in the island nation or probably in the world. But the Sri Lankan military hierarchy is confident of success as specialized units, which cannot be identified due to security reasons, are being deployed. Suffice to say that these troops have faced and overcome similar obstacles in other parts of the island which they wrested control of from the Tigers since this operation began in 2006.
