Saudi Arabia to allow Bangladeshi workers to switch jobs with same work permit

Dhaka, 23 April (Asiantribune.com): Saudi Arabia will allow Bangladeshi workers to switch jobs on same work permit, Bangladesh foreign minister Dipu Moni said Wednesday.

Dipu Moni who is with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on the tour to the kingdom told a local news agency on telephone that the prime minister and her entourage performed Umrah on Tuesday night.

The foreign minister quoted the Saudi king as telling the prime minister that his government would allow increasing number of Bangladeshi workers to go and work in Saudi Arabia.

"Earlier, she met with king Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud in (capital) Riyadh in the afternoon," she said in the morning and added that the meeting was successful.

At least two million skilled and unskilled Bangladeshi workers are currently on the employment rolls of the oil-rich Saudis, who would not so far be allowed to switch jobs keeping their work permits unchanged.

Bangladeshis are the largest group of foreign nationals in the kingdom. The PM is likely to discuss about the betterment of Bangladeshi workers in the KSA.

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina arrived in Riyadh Tuesday morning on a five-day official visit to discuss bilateral issues on her first foreign trip since she took the office on January 6.
The prime minister is scheduled to leave Jeddah for Dhaka on April 25.
