France Contemplating Military Intervention?

A Commentary by L. Jayasooriya

Reports in the media say that when the French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner who was threatening to carry out a "humanitarian operation” in Sri Lanka was asked whether France was contemplating military intervention has replied in the negative and has added "We certainly have not reached that point". That later statement is a message to the government of Sri Lanka from the Foreign Minister of France that unless Sri Lanka complied with the orders given by Kouchner military intervention will follow.

It is clear that Kouchner does not know the basics of his job. If he had even a little bit of common sense he would have known that such military intervention is impossible in the context of location and power distribution among the three super powers in the world today. That is why Iran will develop nuclear weapons and the means of delivery and Israel will give up vast amounts of territory to re-establish independent sovereign Palestine. Kouchner’s stupid arrogance has already embarrassed the President of France and he could expect more problems from Kouchner in the future.

It would have been better for Kouchner to have kept silent and allow people to think that he is a fool rather than open his mouth and prove it.
