Thailand to extradite Thakshin: Sends request to UAE and Nicaragua

Bangkok, 05 May, (Asiantribune.com): Though the Thakshin ShinawataraThakshin Shinawatara whereabouts of former Thai Prime Minister Thakshin Shinawatara is not known, Thailand has submitted extradition requests through diplomatic channels to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Nicaragua to facilitate the his extradition.

This was disclosed by on Monday by Sirisak Tiyapan, Director-General of the Office of the Attorney-General's Foreign Affairs Department yesterday that the request had been made through the Foreign Ministry.

Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs Veerasak Futrakul said on Monday that although Thailand has no extradition treaty with UAE or Nicaragua, Thailand can seek cooperation with them on a reciprocal and voluntary basis.

Veerasak added that it can take a considerable time to negotiate and reach agreement on a formal extradition treaty.

Former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatara was toppled by the September 2006 coup d’etat, later convicted and given a two-year jail term after he was found guilty of involvement in a questionable Ratchadapisek land deal. He is now living in exile and reportedly spends most of his time in Dubai after his visa was rejected by the United Kingdom.

He was accused of using Dubai as his base from where he allegedly encouraged unrest by his supporters - active under the banner the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD).

He has denied these accusations but his Thai passport was revoked by the Thai Foreign Ministry mid-April following the political turmoil and street violence caused by his supporters rallying under the UDD banner.

This is a good chance for

This is a good chance for others those who are in power should never try to abuse it. But most leaders forget it when they come to power, they forget that they used to be human beings and try to shine thorough the position they have been accorded by people for a short period. Once it is over, such leader who are claimed to have abused the power should be ready to face the chargers imposed against them. If someone has not done any misdeeds, there is no reason to fear them. Thakshin now appears to have fallen into the fire from the frying pan. No place to hide in this world.
