Western envoys urge parties for cooperation

Kosh Raj Koirala – Asian Tribune Correspondent in Nepal

Kathmandu, 07 May, (Asiantribune.com):Envoys from various Western countries including the United States on Wednesday urged political parties in Nepal to develop cooperation to bail the country out from current political stalemate.

The envoys from the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Finland and Denmark and a representative of the European Union made the request during their separate meeting with the prime minister of the care taker government Pushpa Kamal Dahal and CPN-UML Chairman Jhala Nath Khanal. The meeting held detailed discussions on current political situation in the country in the aftermath of Maoists stepping down from the government on Monday.

Talking briefly to media after meeting Chairman Khanal, Pirkko Liisa Kyostila, Charge d´Affairs at the Finish Embassy in Kathmandu, said they held discussions on the current political situation and the challenges that Nepal faces.

“Our suggestion has been that it is best to cooperate, be constructive and seek common ground and thinking for the common good of Nepal and Nepali people,” Kyostila said while responding to a query by journalists.

Kyostila said they also suggested major parties including the CPN-UML, the Maoists and Nepali Congress to develop cooperation to find a way forward from the current political situation.

Talking to media persons, Chairman Khanal said the envoys expressed concern if the Maoist decision to step down from the government would affect the ongoing peace process and constitution drafting works. “But we assured them that we would use this crisis as an opportunity,” he added. “All we need is support from the international community.”

He said that the envoys also lauded the initiatives taken to form a national government.

There have been worries about the prospect of ongoing peace process as local level Maoist cadres in Ramechhap and Kailai districts issued 5-day ultimatum for the cadres of rival parties to leave the village or face serious consequences. The Maoist cadres also announced to launch nation-wide protest unless President Dr Ram Baran Yadav revokes his decision to block the government action to sack army chief Rookmangud Katawal on Sunday.
