Bangladesh-UK joint naval exercise in the Bay of Bengal ends

Dhaka, 07 April (Asiantribune.com): The five-day Bangladesh- UK joint naval exercise dubbed 'Shomudro Torongo' off Kutubdia Island in the Bay of Bengal concluded on May 3, a British high commission press statement said Wednesday.

The high commission in the statement said the exercise aimed to share expertise to combat terrorism and preparedness for natural disasters in the region.

The Bangladesh Navy and the Royal Navy assembled their forces for a finale that saw them practicing interception and boarding drills, according to the statement.

High officials of Bangladesh armed forces and the British high commission attended the concluding part of the exercise.

The highlights of the event included an air defense exercise, fire-fighting drills, ship maneuvering serials and others.

The statement quoted Commodore Peter Hudson, commander UK Amphibious Task Group, saying, "This ambitious and demanding exercise set some complex hurdles in a challenging coastal and riverine environment."

The mock naval warfare was kicked off in the Bay of Bengal on 29 April with the view to enhancing cooperation between Bangladesh security forces and British Navy.

The exercise started under the supervision of Bangladesh Navy and at the initiative of the United Kingdom, according to a press statement from the armed forces public relations division called ISPR.

Two warships of the British Navy and few ships of Bangladesh Navy and Coast Guard took part in the exercise. Besides, few fighter aircraft and helicopter of Bangladesh Air force and a large number of Commandos also joined the joint exercises.
