Dhaka, 08 May (Asuiantribune.com): Leaders and activists of the Jatiya Party (JP-Manju) on Thursday observed hartal in Bhandaria upazila under Barisal division to press for release of party chief Anwar Hossain Manju.

Road communication between Barisal, Pirojpur and Khulna district was snapped since morning yesterday to mark the strike.

Bhandaria police chief Motiur Rahman said the JP activists vandalised the office of Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), upazila social welfare office and upazila accountant office.

Aktaruzzaman Dulal, chairman of a union parishad who belongs to BNP, came under attack of the protesters. Dulal was admitted to Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College.

The pro-hartal activists brought out a protest rally in the upazila headquarters to press their demands.

A Dhaka court on Wednesday sent Jatiya Party (JP-Manju) Chairman Anwar Hossain Manju and former state minister cum opposition BNP leader Barrister Shahjahan Omar to jail in separate cases. There was no such protest by the leader and activists of BNP for its leader Omar.

The Special Court-10 of Judge Arifur Rahman sent them to jail when they surrendered before it yesterday morning as per the Supreme Court directions.

Earlier on May 15 last year, a special court dealing with graft cases jailed Omar for 13 years for amassing wealth illegally and concealing information in his wealth statement submitted to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

JP chair Manju was jailed for 32 years in different cases.

A Dhaka court on July 26, 2007 sentenced him to five years' simple imprisonment and fined Tk 10,000 for possessing 21 bottles of contraband liquor at his Dhanmondi residence.

On May 18 last year, a special court dealing with graft cases sentenced Manju to seven years' imprisonment in a bribery case filed by the ACC.

He was handed down 13 years' rigorous imprisonment on August 26, 2008 for amassing wealth illegally and concealing information in his wealth statement submitted to the anti-graft watchdog.
In another case he was given seven years' imprisonment and fined Tk 75 lakh.

Both Manju and Omar were convicted in absentia for corruptions during the period of the past army-backed emergency government.
