Pakistani cabinet endorses operation against militants - Fund set up for IDPs

Islamabad, 10 May, (Asiantribune.com): Pakistani Cabinet on Saturday endorsed the ongoing military operation in Swat and Malakand.
Addressing a news conference after the cabinet meeting, Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani said that the federal cabinet has endorsed the government's decision to launch a military operation in Malakand Division.
Gilani said the operation will continue until the militants and terrorists have been defeated.
The prime minister added that session of the National Assembly has been called on Monday to discuss the security situation in the country, including the military offensive.
Gilani said militants were fighting a guerrilla war, adding the nation's support was important in order to defeat the menace.
The prime minister also announced the establishment of a fund of 200 million rupees to provide relief for internally displaced people. He said that cabinet members will also donate one month's salary to the IDPs.
He said Pakistani embassies have been directed to launch a drive for displace people as well as Benazir Income Support Program and health ministry also directed to take care of displaced people.
‘A delegation of parliamentarians will be dispatch to different countries in this connection,’ said prime minister.
Thousands of people have been uprooted in Swat and Buner due to militancy and military operation.
The International Committee of the Red Cross warned Thursday that a humanitarian crisis was intensifying in northwest Pakistan, where thousands have fled fighting between militants and troops.
The government in North West Frontier Province has said up to half a million could flee the Taliban flashpoint district of Swat.
