Nuclear scientist Dr. Wazed laid to rest at his village home at his family graveyard

Dhaka, 11 May (Asiantribune.com): Eminent nuclear scientist Dr MA Wazed Miah, husband of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday was laid to rest at his family graveyard in Pirganj upazila of Rangpur district.

He was laid to eternal rest at his family graveyard beside his parents after a second namaz-e-janaza in the afternoon.

The first namaz-e-janaza of Dr MA Wazed Miah was held at Baitul Mokarram National Mosque in the capital yesterday morning.

Hundreds of people from all walks of life paid tribute to the eminent nuclear scientist by showering flowers on his coffin.

Bangladesh President Zillur Rahman, Speaker Abdul Hamid, Deputy Speaker Shawkat Ali, cabinet members, parliament members, leaders of different political parties, eminent personalities and hundreds of people from all walks of life took part in the janaza, led by Khatib of the national mosque Maulana Salahuddin.

The janaza prayers began yesterday at 10:45am, about 45 minute behind the schedule, as the body could not reach in time from the hospital.

Later, the body was kept for some time before the mosque enabling people to pay their last respects to the late scientist. Later, his body was flown to his ancestral home at Fatepur of Pirganj upazila in Rangpur district.

Dr M Wazed Miah died at the age of 66 at the city’s Square Hospital yesterday afternoon after a prolonged illness.

He was suffering from kidney and cardiac problems. Recently, he had undergone angioplasty at Singapore National Heart Centre.

A condolence book was opened at PM’s official residence Jamuna at 11:00am yesterday for three days for diplomats and representatives of donor agencies to register their condolences on the death of Dr Wazed.

The Qulkhawani of Wazed Miah will be held in Sheikh Hasina’s official residence Jamuna on Thursday after Magrib prayers. A theoretical physicist, Dr Miah obtained Ph. D degree from Imperial College London. He married Hasina in 1968 and is survived by Hasina, son Sajeeb Wazed Joy and daughter Saima Wazed Hossain Putul.

He lived a quiet life after retirement at Sudha Sadan. He was also known among relatives and friends as 'Sudha Miah'.

Dr Miah authored many books including Fundamentals of Thermodynamics and Fundamentals of Electromagnetics.
