Two media giants' "NDTV-HINDU" goes on air

By Gopal Ethiraj from Chennai

Chennai 16 May (Asiantribune.com): The two corporate giants of electronic and print media -- NDTV and The Hindu -- have come together with an English news and entertainment channel, ‘NDTV Hindu’ that is being launched today in Chennai. The channel will cover news, current affairs and other city information.

NDTV and The Hindu are partners in the Chennai's first and only city-specific English news and entertainment channel, NDTV Ltd said in a statement.

"We firmly believe that the future of news is in going local. The Hindu Group, with its impeccable credentials, has been a household name for generations in Chennai, and this partnership will help NDTV HINDU capitalize on the brand strengths and journalistic values of both the media houses," NDTV chairman Prannoy Roy said.

The free-to-air channel will telecast shows like 'I Spy with My Digital Eye' (aimed at students), 'Super Shopper' (for shoppers) and 'Shift Focus' (latest events). "Chennai is fast evolving as a cosmopolitan city. Though there are a few Indian language channels that exist for local news, there is no English channel catering exclusively for the vibrant city," said N. Ram, Editor-in-Chief, The Hindu.
