Tigers blowing up their arms and ammunition

Hilary Rajakarunanayake, Editor – Sri Lanka, Asian Tribune

Colombo, 16 May, (Asiantribune.com): Tamil Tiger are now trying their maximum to do damage control even at this last moment of their losing battle," the Army said, adding that there was heavy fighting overnight.

Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse has vowed to take the last territory from the Tigers by Sunday, ending the separatists' 37-year armed campaign for the division of the country.

“Several young LTTE cadres, both male and female, in their early teens, most as young as 14 years of age were seen to have thrown away their guns into the lagoon in utter frustration in the face of defeat, and joined the mass movement of civilians into Government controlled areas” said an Army source.

A military spokesperson toldAsian Tribune around 11,000 civilians had managed to flee to government areas by Friday night, and that there was now "hardly anybody left" in the LTTE controlled zone on the northeast coast.

"They are slowly giving up. They are blowing up whatever arms and ammunition they have," Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara said of the remnants of the once-powerful Tamil Tiger army.

“The victory over the Tigers is mainly attributable to the fact that the supply lines of the Sri Lanka Army was always well stocked, due to very efficient stores management”, Army spokesman Brigadier Nanayakkara said.
