47 militants killed in ongoing military operation: DG ISPR

Islamabad, 17 May, (Asiantribune.com): As many as 47 militants were killed over the last 24 hours of its air and ground offensive against the Taliban in Swat, Malakand, Pakistani military said on Saturday.

Chief military spokesman Major General Athar Abbas told a news conference that "47 terrorists have been killed in the last 24 hours".

Abbas showed journalists video footage that he said showed militant hideouts and ammunition dumps destroyed by security forces during raids in Swat, a mountainous district once frequented by holidaymakers but now a Taliban hub.

He said forces were getting closer to Mingora, the main town in the district of Swat, to check on militants trying to flee the area, where residents widely expect the military to launch an assault to re-take control.

The DG ISPR said operation is successfully underway in Swat, Shangla and Buner while four militants have been arrested from Hayasirai and Shamuzai. A militant named Sher Alam a commander identified as Mukhtar, was arrested from Malam Jabba.

Abbas said a militants’ den was destroyed in Shamuzai area.

He said no foreign help was used for carrying out operation against militants.
