Kathmandu, 18 May, (Asiantribune.com): : Senior leader of the CPN-UML Madhav Kumar Nepal, who was proposed as a prime ministerial candidate in the new government, finally succeeded to garner a clear majority.
The success comes after a few days of certainty due to differences within a key ally in the new government, Madhesi People’s Rights Forum (MPRF).
Altogether 350 of 601 lawmakers from various 22 political parties including the MPRF on Monday submitted a list of signatures supporting Nepal as new Prime Minister to Speaker Subas Nemwang.
Receiving the signatures, the Speaker assured that he will soon call the meeting of the legislature-parliament and push ahead the process of government formation.
He also expressed confidence that with the submission of the signatures for the formation of majority government it will be easy to push ahead the constitution drafting process which has been delayed due to repeated obstructions in the House.
Only two of the 24 parties in the CA -- Unified Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) and Nepal Workers and Peasants´ Party (NWPP) -- did not sign in favor of Nepal. The NWPP is still undecided whether to support the UML-led government or remain neutral.
Earlier, two factions of MPRF led by the party chairman Upendra Yadav and its parliamentary party leader Bijay Gachchhadar had lobbied for Maoist-led government and UML-led government, respectively.
The alliance led by UML and NC, the third and second largest party in the CA, had proposed Nepal as future PM and asked other political parties to support the alliance after the Maoist PM Pushpa Kamal Dahal stepped down on May 4.
