Guruparan of Sooriyan FM missing: so far no clues

His wife made a complaint to the Mount Lavania Police saying that her husband was missing. She told the Police that all contacts with her husband have failed after he had left for his work around 4.30 a.m.

Subsequently Police found his vehicle left abandoned at the Pinthalaya Raod Junction, on the entrance to the Galle Road.

Police said, "The engine of his vehicle was still running when it was recovered without its inmates or the driver."

It is suspected that Guruparan of the Colombo-based Pro LTTE Tamil radio station Sooriyan FM must has been abducted yesterday by unknown persons in Mount Lavinia.

Guruparan is from Innuvil, Jaffna, and earlier he worked with Sarinigar, an alternative fortnightly newspaper, that was published by Movement for Inter-Racial Justice and Equality (MIRJE).

He was a member of the Peoples Liberation Organization of Tamil Eelam (PLOTE) - an armed Tamil group in his early days. He left the outfit and became an independent journalist.

He later joined the Sooriyan FM, run by Asian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), the parent company of five radio stations. He has been working as news editor and later news manager in Sooriyan FM.

His Viluthukal programme, aired in Sooriyan FM last Saturday, was about human rights violations and abductions in Colombo.

Guruparan, popularly known as Sooriyan Kuru has interviewed the parents of missing persons, parliamentarians and human rights activists in his radio programme Viluthukal
