Sweden to Close down its mission in Colombo?

Colombo, 20 May, (Asiantribune.com): Sweden is expected to decide today on the future of its embassy in Sri Lanka. Based on the rationalization committee report prepared in October 2008, Sweden is supposed to review the necessity of keeping its mission in Colombo.

The opposition Social Democratic Party leaders told Asian Tribune that they don’t support the government’s move at this juncture to close down its mission in Colombo.

They said at present it is the duty of Sweden and the international community to support Sri Lanka in its humanitarian crises. They said closing down the mission in Colombo would send wrong signals to the international community about Sweden. They also said that It may also reflect that Sweden is reluctant to support humanitarian issues.

It was alleged that the sudden move to close down Colombo mission was taken up after the allegation that Sri Lanka refused to grant visa to Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt to join with David Miliband from the UK and France's Bernard Kouchner when they visited Colombo last month.

Subsequently Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt recalled Borje Mattsson, the Charge d’ Affaires of the Swedish mission in Colombo for consultation.

On his return back to Colombo, Asian Tribune learnt that Charge d’ Affaires, met Sri Lanka’s Foreign Secretary Dr, Palaitha Kohona on 15th May and informed that Swedish Governmnet is seriously considering to close down its mission in Colombo.

Though the Swedish Ambassador based in New Delhi is accredited to Sri Lanka mission, Borje Mattsson, is the Charge d’ Affaires and he is posted with more than five home based staff at the Swedish Embassy located at Bullers Lane, Colombo.

Many Sri Lankans, who are naturalized Swedish citizens, told Asian Tribune that they do not support the move by the government to close down its mission in Colombo. They told it might greatly inconvenience them. They also said that no attempt was made up to now, by the government to ascertain their views on the subject.

I don't know whether to

I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

Having brokered a peace deal that failed to achieve peace and as predicted by some it was more in favour of the LTTE than the democratically elected government of Sri Lanka, having allowed our High Commission to be attacked despite prior warnings and not even apologising to the SL Foreign Minister, the Swedish Foreign Minister having discussions with K Pathmanathan the arms procurer for the LTTE and a fugitive from Interpol, I'm sure Sri Lanka will not miss them. But watch out SL they will now try to work with the EU to destabilise us.

So don't know if it would have been better for Sri Lanka to have had Sweden pissing out from inside the tent than have them pissing in from outside (as Winston Churchill said of one of his adversaries during the world war).
