Dhaka, 19 May (Asiantribune.com): Bangladesh law enforcing authorities have arrested around 2,979 Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) Jawans so far at the capital and across the country, after the February’s BDR mutiny.
Now only twenty-five members of boarder guard BDR are still absconding since the mutiny at its Pilkhana headquarters on February 25-26, which killed 57 army officers.
Chief of the coordination committee Lt Col (retd) Faruk Khan met the media personnel on Tuesday after the 5th meeting of the committee at BDR Pilkhana headquarters and sought mass media cooperation in the arrest of the fugitive BDR men.
At least 1,398 BDR members were arrested at the capital while 1,581 more were held from 29 district of the country, chief of the coordination committee Lt Col (retd) Faruk Khan told reporters.
Of them, 580 border guards were placed on remand for different terms and 85 confessed their involvements with the February mutiny before separate courts, while around 500 confessed their involvements before police.
Total 3,200 BDR members have faced quizzing in connection with the Pilkhana carnage and mutiny.
The government on April 7 declared Tk 50,000 bounty on each fugitive BDR jawan.
Meanwhile, the BDR authorities published a booklet giving detailed information including photographs of the 325 fugitive BDR men.
The booklet was later distributed to all units of the law enforcement and intelligence agencies so that they could get information about the suspected fugitive mutineers.
According to sources, a total of 13 BDR men died so far in custody since March 9 and of them seven reportedly committed suicide and six died of cardiac arrest.
However, the government is working out plans to reconstitute the BDR by changing its name and uniform to bring back the lost image of the age-old boarder forces.
