India to offer Rs. 500 crore more aid to SL, Two special envoys to visit Colombo

By M Rama Rao, India Editor, Asian Tribune

New Delhi, 19 May, (asiantribune.com): India will provide a Rs. 500 crore package for rehabilitation of displaced Tamils in the Eelam War IV.

‘A package of almost Rs 500 crores which will be required for rehabilitation is under preparation’, External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee, who is tipped to move to the finance ministry in the second Manmohan Singh government, told reporters here on Tuesday.

This assistance may be in addition to Rs. 100-crore aid announced by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh last month. Tamilnadu government is chipping in with an assistance of Rs 25 crore.

Pranab Mukherjee indicated that Delhi would send special envoys to Colombo to discuss details modalities of the package. National Security Adviser M K Narayanan and Foreign Secretary Shiv Shankar Menon may undertake the mission but dates are yet to be finalized. Both have been to Colombo only a few days ago. This time their discussions would focus as much on rehabilitation as on political package steps to ensure ‘effective devolution of power’.

DEVOLUTION IF ANY MUST BE

DEVOLUTION IF ANY MUST BE FOR THE WHOLE ISLAND NOT IN BITS AND PARTS.

This the way to help the

This the way to help the IDPs, not lecture us about what we should be doing as the USA and UK seems to be doing. Sri Lanka anticipated that we will need something like $150 million for resettlement & rehabilitation of IDPs. It might be more now because of the scale of the problem. The contribution from India ($ 100 million package) is the act of a true friend. We should always remember our true friends.
