General Sarath Fonseka tipped to be Joint Chief of Armed Forces

Hilary Rajakarunanayake, Editor – Sri Lanka, Asian Tribune

Colombo, 20 May, (Asiantribune.com): The appointment of Army Commander General Sarath Fonseka as Joint Chief of Armed Forces is in the pipeline and is at present under consideration by President Mahinda Rajapaksa after he successfully led the war against the LTTE, a senior official of the Presidential Secretariat told Asian Tribune.

Although the war in the North has ended, the armed forces are kept on alert and are on the lookout for any eruptions or for any pockets of resistance.

More youths are being recruited to the Armed Forces even now after the war is over because the Sri Lanka Government envisages more work in resettlement and rehabilitation of the Internal Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the North.

Asian Tribune learns that Gen. Fonseka will be temporarily given the authority to maintain law and order in the North and East until peace and harmony is established.

Chief of Defence Staff Air Chief Marshal Donald Perera, Navy Commander Admiral Wasantha Karannagoda and Air Force Commander Air Chief Marshal Roshan Gunatilake are tipped to be appointed ambassadors to China, Russia and Israel, said the official.

Asian Tribune learns that many leaders of the ruling UPFA have urged the President to bring Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa to Parliament and appoint him as Deputy Minister of Defence, he added.
