Dhaka, 22 May (Asiantribune.com): After extending the deadline for four times, the government committee to probe into the February 25-26 massacre at Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) headquarters at Pilkhana, Dhaka submitted its report to the home ministry on Thursday.

"We've based the report on truth and reality. There is nothing based on speculation," committee chief Anisuzzaman Khan told reporters at the secretariat, after handing over the 309-page report to home minister Sahara Khatun.

The home minister said the government would soon let people know the findings of the investigation through media.

"We are committed to the people to publish the report and we will fulfill our commitment," the home minister said seeking media help to ensure punishment of the culprits.

Replying to reporters on why the border guards went on rampage, Khan, without giving any more details, uttered just one word 'revolt.'

The government formed the inquiry committee on Feb 26 headed by the home minister, but later reformed the committee with the retired civil servant amid protests from a quarter.

The committee is comprised of 11 former and serving bureaucrats and high-ranking officers from the army, navy and air force.

The committee, reconstituted on March 2, began its work the following day. Its last deadline for submission of the report expired on May 11. Earlier, the time was extended for four times.

The first deadline for its report, March 9, was extended by seven working days.

On Mar 23, the committee got another four days.

Finally on Mar 30, the committee was given 30 more workdays to submit the report for a proper investigation into the bloodbath at the BDR headquarters at Pilkhana that left at least 57 army officers killed.

Earlier, another probe committee formed by the army has already submitted their report to the army chief.
