Colombo, 01 June, (Asiantribune.com): The final rehearsal for the National Victory Parade to be held at the Galle Face Green on June 3 will take place today.

Several leading schools in Colombo will be closed from today to Wednesday 3rd to accommodate Service personnel who have come to Colombo in large numbers to participate in the National Victory Parade on Wednesday June 3.

"This Victory Parade with so much fanfare and grandeur out beats the last Victory Parade held in Colombo after the conquest of the allied forces at the end of world war two in 1945", said an Army high official.

Elaborate arrangements are being made to hold the National Victory Parade at Galle Face Green scheduled for Wednesday (June 3) on a grand scale when Air Force jet planes and helicopters will also participate in several sky feats.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa will take the salute at the national victory parade. Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, Security Forces Commanders, the IGP and Civil Defence Force Director General, Ministers, Members of the Diplomatic Corps and other distinguished guests and troops who took part in the battle to vanquish LTTE terror will participate in the celebrations.

Security Forces’ personnel along with their commanding officers, engaged in direct operations in the recently concluded ‘humanitarian operations’ in the North and East are expected to take part in this special parade. The Military Commanders are expected to present a special memorandum to the President during the occasion, to convey the nation’s victory over terrorism.

During this historic event, weapons seized from the LTTE, which were used by them to cause mass destruction during the last three decades, too would be on public display.

The ‘National Victory Parade’ will also feature several traditional cultural events with more than 4,000 artistes in attendance, the Government Information Department said.
