Bangladesh: Kuwait emir arrives next month

Dhaka, 20 May, (INS + Asiantribune.com): Emir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah will visit Bangladesh next month at the invitation of Prime Minister Khaleda Zia.

The Emir's visit is taking place less than a month of the Prime Minister's official visit to Kuwait on May 7-8.

The Emir is expected to lead an 80-member high-power delegation, which will include all the important cabinet ministers, Foreign Minister Morshed Khan told the diplomatic correspondents yesterday.

Morshed Khan, however, could not confirm the exact date. It is expected that the Emir may arrive in Dhaka some time between June 9 to June 11.

A delegation from the Kuwait Fund is expected to arrive in Dhaka on May 27 to finalise the financing of the Karnaphuli Bridge as per the commitment given to the Prime Minister during her visit, the foreign minister said.

The Kuwait Fund is to provide $52 million for the construction of the bridge.

The Kuwaiti Emir would be here on the first leg of his 4-nation tour that would take him to India, Pakistan and Thailand.

Foreign Ministry officials considered Khaleda Zia's Kuwait visit very successful as the Kuwaiti government agreed to sale oil to Bangladesh on credit at a favorable price and withdrew restrictions to recruit manpower from Bangladesh.

Meanwhile, Foreign Ministry officials said newly elected Sri Lankan President Mahindra Rajapakse will also be visiting Bangladesh in July.
