Colombo-Katunayake express highway ready for construction

The agreement pertaining to the construction of the Colombo-Katunayake express highway is signed. Chinese MCC Company will carry out the construction work. The relevant agreement was signed on Sunday at the Ministry for Trade and Consumer Affaires and Highways with the presence of the Minister of Highways Jeyaraj Fernandopulle. Chairman of the Road Development Authority M.B.S. Fernando signed it on behalf of the government and vice president of the MCC Company Shu Siyang Chu signed it on behalf of the company.

The 25.8-kilometer road will consist of four lanes. The total cost of the project is US$ 292 million.

Speaking Minister Jeyaraj Fernandopulle said that the Government will implement several more road development programmes in the near future. Construction of the Matara-Colombo and the Colombo-Kandy express high ways will be completed within the next 5 years.

The Asian Development Bank assists the Matara-Colombo High way project. Minister Fernandopulle pointed out that development of road network of the county is highly instrumental in accelerating the government’s development programmes.
