An inferno at AVM studios; two real sets burn down

By Gopal Ethiraj, Chennai

Chennai, 01 August, (Asiantribune.com): A major fire broke out at the famous AVM Studios here on Friday morning . However, there were no casualties in the blaze as it happened in the wee hours, engulfing the sets erected for an under production movie and a TV serial.

More than 20 fire tenders doused the flames battling for about two hours. The loss according to studio sources is estimated to be Rs. 5 crores. Police suspect an electrical short circuit to be the reason for the fire.

First the fire broke out at the 6th set (called Floor) where decorative works made for a Vijay TV’s game show serial (Airtel Super Singer musical extravaganza, presently on air) were kept. Then it spread to the 7th set where actor Vijay’s movie “Vettaikaran,” produced by AVM Balasubramanian (owner of both floors), was being shot for the past one week.

The concrete structures of two floors have been fully damaged, and they have to be rebuilt, according to studio authorities. The flames of the fires reduced to ashes the camera and electrical equipments. A timely alert by the studio watchman had saved a part of the 7th set properties and the 8th set nearby.
