Surviving members of Bangabandhu’s family to be protected

Dhaka, 27 July (Asiantribune.com): The surviving members of ‘Bangabandhu’ Sheikh Mujibur Rahman family to be given special protection by a new statutory arrangement. Accordingly, Bangladesh cabinet on Monday approved the Father of the Nation's Family Members' Security Act 2009, a spokesman said.

The law says Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's two daughters Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana and their children will be entitled to special lifelong security, which will entail affording them protected houses with SSF guards.
The law defines "the family of the Father of the Nation" as his two daughters and their children, will be protected, said Abul Kalam Azad, the press secretary to the prime minister.

It will remain effective through an executive order until passage in parliament.

The prime minister’s press secretary at a press briefing said "In the backdrop of the assassination of the Father of the Nation ‘Bangabandhu’ Sheikh Mujibur Rahman with most of his family members on 15 August in 1975, followed by the the August 21, 2004 grenade attack and other similar heinous occurrences, the incumbent government has enacted the law to ensure the security of the survivors of Bangabandhu."
