By Quintus Perera – Quintus Perera

Colombo, 07 August, (Asiantribune.com): Business enterprises engage in various activities to improve their competitiveness. These include provision of better quality products, training employees, abiding by laws and regulations relevant to the business, enhancing the efficiency of resource usage etc. These various initiatives fall under the tag of ‘Corporate Social Responsibility’. The Ceylon Chamber of Commerce has been promoting private sector entities to adopt principles of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and become better corporate citizens, which in turn contributes to enhance profitability, the core of most business decisions.

The Ceylon Chamber is organizing the Best Corporate Citizen Award for the 6th consecutive time, this year. The objective of the Awards is to raise awareness on the importance of CSR among the business community and to encourage good business (CSR) practices.

The Chamber will hold a seminar on Corporate Social Responsibility on 13th August 2009 at the Chamber auditorium to explain the diverse aspects of CSR, how it can help improve the performance of business and give details of the Award scheme.

Apart from the main Award, the Chamber presents awards to businesses that have undertaken special philanthropic projects in areas such as Education, Health, Disaster relief, Infrastructure (building roads, housing, schools..) etc. Businesses that do not have a comprehensive CSR approach but have undertaken specific initiatives stated above can apply for the ‘Special Projects’ Awards.
