Sri Lankan Government Accelerates Water Supply Project to Jaffna

Colombo, 17 August, (Asiantribune.com): The Government has accelerated the project of water supply to the Jaffna peninsula under the Uthuru Wasanthaya (Northern Spring) program, the Northern Province Governor’s secretariat announces.

Senior Advisor to the President and Chairman of the Presidential Task Force for the Development of the North, Basil Rajapaksa MP, supervises the project while the Social Services Minister Douglas Devananda, Northern Province Governor Major General G.A.Chandrasiri and many other government officials directly involve in the process.

Chunnakam Water Supply project which was also built under the 180 day program was ceremonially opened by the Provincial Council Minister A.L.M. Athaullah and the project has finished at a cost of Rs 3.5 million.

Governor’s secretariat office further says that Karaveddi Water Supply project which is being built at a cost of Rs 25 million is almost finished and it is being constructed under the 180 day program which comes in Northern Spring program. The total amount which the Northern Spring program has allocated for the water supply for Jaffna civilians is Rs 48 million.

Meanwhile, the government has also made arrangements to spent Rs 24750 million on a long term project to complete the water needs of Jaffna civilians with the financial assistance of the Asian Development Bank.
