Ethnic group shuts down nine districts in eastern Nepal

Kosit R. Koirala - Reporting from Nepal

Kathmandu, 07 August, (Asiantribune.com): An ethnic group called Limbuwan State Council shut down nine districts in eastern Nepal, protesting against the government plan to introduce Special Security Plan in these armed groups-infested districts.

Normal life was badly affected as all businesses and academic institutions remained shut in Jhapa, Illam, Morang, Sunsari, Panchthar, Dhankuta, Taplejung, Sankhuwasabha and Terhathum districts. Limbuwan activists also obstructed vehicular movement by placing longs and stones in various section of highway in these districts.

Issuing a press statement, the Council’s President C P Tumbahamhe alleged that the government’s security plan aims at oppressing ethnic communities living in these districts. The body has asked the government to withdraw the plan.

The government last week announced to implement special security plan as several armed groups are in operation in these districts, carrying out extortions, kidnapping and collecting donations purportedly to meet their political ends.
