No quibbling over terrorist: Israeli envoy

From S Murari, Chennai

Chennai. 13 Aug ( Mr Mark Sofer, Israeli ambassador to India who is also non-resident ambassador to Sri Lanka, does not believe in the dictum that one man's terrorist is another's freedom fighter.

Mr Sofar told reporters here on Wednesday:" A terrorist is a terrorist . We cannot accept the view that one man's terrorist is another's freedom fighter".

He made this comment in an apparent reference to the now extinct LTTE after discussing the Lanka issue with Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy.

Mr Sofar called on Dr Swamy, whom he described as an old friend, at his residence. He was accompanied by Sri Lankan Tamil leader S. C. Chandrahasan who is also the founder of the Organization for Eelam Refugees Rehabilitation( OFERR).

Dr. Swamy reiterated that Sri Lanka should allow for devolution of powers and take measures to regain the confidence of the Tamils. Though Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa had suggested that devolution would be effected after the elections, Dr Swamy said it should be done immediately to win the Tamils’ confidence.
