UN marks first World Humanitarian Day?

Washington, 20 August, (Asiantribune.com): The United Nations is marking the first World Humanitarian Day by honoring relief workers who lost their lives, and highlighting the growing dangers they face.? Secretary General Ban Ki-moon laid a wreath at UN headquarters in New York.?

The first World Humanitarian Day comes on the sixth anniversary of the 2003 truck bomb attack on the UN offices in Baghdad, Iraq. Twenty-two people were killed, including the top UN envoy to Iraq.? The United Nations says 122 aid workers were killed in 2008, up from 36 in 1998.

In all, the UN says 260 humanitarian aid workers were killed, kidnapped, seriously hurt or raped in 2008.? On Tuesday; two Afghan employees of the UN mission in Afghanistan were killed in a suicide attack near the capital, Kabul.?
