LTTE runs berserk - 4 policemen killed, 1 police sergeant and 3 soldiers wounded.

Colombo, 25 May, ( This morning about 6.45 a.m., Police Constables Jayaratne and Navaratne and auxiliary policemen Ramanathan and Badurdeen were killed while they were on duty near the Failvan Mosque at Uttukathankudi located on the Batticaloa – Kalmunai Road, when the suspected cadres belonging to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) activated claymore mine.

Just barely two hours after the explosion, according to the Sri Lanka Army report, LTTE cadres belonging to the pistol group on motorbike pursued a Police jeep that was proceeding for the investigations and attacked it with pistol shots, injuring one Police Sergeant. However, according to reports, policemen in the jeep retaliated the attack.

Troops, assisted by policemen immediately cordoned the area and were conducting search in the affected area as this report was filed.

Meanwhile, suspected LTTE cadres this morning, around 9.45 a.m., repeated their brutal attack similar to the manner they earlier killed the Security Forces personnel on Wednesday and triggered another claymore mine targeting troops in Vavuniya.

Three soldiers carrying meals to troops on an Army tractor were wounded when their vehicle was trapped in LTTE laid explosion, close to the Chettikulam Police station located off Vavuniya.

Three injured soldiers, including one civilian who was critically affected were initially admitted to the Madawadchiya hospital and later transferred to the hospital at Anuradhapura for further treatment.

A civilian, in the meantime has been shot and injured by an unidentified gunman, suspected to be from the LTTE Wednesday (24) around 8.30 p.m. at Nochchikulam in Vavuniya. Victim M. A. Yogarajah (24) has been admitted to Chettikulam hospital for treatment.
