Top-rate students win Australian Leadership Awards

Sunil C. Perera - Reporting from Colombo

Colombo, 09 December, (Asiantribune.com): The Australian High Commissioner, Dr Greg French, yesterday announced that 10 Sri Lankan and four Maldivian high performers will receive prestigious Australian Leadership Awards.

The Australian Leadership Awards are part of the A$1.4 billion Australian Scholarships initiative for the Asia-Pacific announced by the Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs, Alexander Downer, on 26 April 2006.

‘The future and current leaders we are honouring here today will further strengthen the relationship between our countries through enduring linkages and partnerships’, the High Commissioner stated.

The 14 scholars will undertake postgraduate studies in Australia in a broad range of research areas from environmental science and international relations to computer security and molecular biology.

‘Molecular biology has provided many recent advances in modern medicine, including new antibiotics and drugs to benefit those with cancer. My country needs expertise in this area and leaders who understand it,’ said award winner Sanjanie Fernando.

The Australian Leadership Awards were keenly sought in the first year with 179 scholars identified from nearly 1,000 applications, representing 24 countries around the region.

‘These awards demonstrates the importance that Australia attaches to education for long term development in our region’, the High Commissioner said.
