Sri Lanka Government importing 10,000 MT of essential food items directly from Tamil Nadu to Jaffna

Colombo, 09 December, (Asiantribune.com): Sri Lanka Government is making immediate arrangements to import 10,000MT of essential food items urgently needed to people in the Jaffna Peninsula from Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

Ship is being at present loaded in the Chennai harbor and expected to arrive either to Point Pedro or Kankesanthurai harbor within 07 to 10 days.

Douglas Devananda, Minister for Social Services and Social Welfare speaking to "Asian Tribune," said that at present there is enough rice, sugar and flour available to an extent in Jaffna and what is presently needed are essential ingredients required to prepare nutritious food.

Therefore, he said that on the special orders of President Mahinda Rajapakse, Sri Lanka Government has made arrangements to import these items from Tamil Nadu directly to the Jaffna Peninsula. He said that CWE is involved in the purchase of these items in Tamil Nadu and shipping them from there directly to Jaffna.

At present, Minister Douglas Devananda told that they are planning to import, rice flakes, coriander, cumin seeds, big fennel seeds, dried chilies, mustard, garlic, pepper, jaggery, iodized salt, tamarind, potatoes, turmeric, soy-meat, dried sprats, pappadam, black gram splitted, green gram, chick pea splitted and atta flour.

The Minister said these items once it arrives into Jaffna will be unloaded and given charge to the Government Agent of Jaffna, who in turn would arrange the distributions of these scarce commodities through retail sale outlets of the primary multi-purpose cooperative societies in the Peninsula.

The Minister when explaining about the import of food commodities from Tamil Nadu said that our brothers in Tamil Nadu will provide their maximum support in the import of food items to their starving brothers in the Jaffna peninsula.

Douglas Devananda also said that the Government is making arrangements to bring in food items from Nagapattinam harbour to Kayts on a daily basis in country boats of 1.8 draughts which will be able to carry nearly 80 MTs of cargoes at a time and the navigational time to Kayts would be only 9 hrs. He said the government would arrange shortly to bring food items from Nagapattinam in three to five country crafts daily.
