Distribution of food items brought from Chennai to Jaffna begins today

Colombo, 06 January, (Asiantribune.com): Government Agent Jaffna is making arrangements to distribute potatoes through Multi-purpose cooperative societies from today onwards as unloading of the MV Mercs Ruhuna , anchored in the Point Pedro port area with 3,500 MT of food items from Chennai, is fast proceeding from yesterday onwards.

When the ship MV Mercs Ruhuna with essential food items from Chennai, Tamil Nadu reached Point Pedro port yesterday, Social Services and Social Welfare Minister Douglas Devananda, Jaffna Security Forces Commander Major General G.A. Chandrasiri and K.Ganesh Government Agent Jaffna were present at that occasion.

It is reported that among the items carried by the ship were 800 MT of sugar, 200 MT of Juggery, 200 MT of Potatoes, and also dhal, chilies, coriander, Cumming seeds, dill seeds, turmeric, dried chilies, iodized salts, rice flakes etc.,.

Yesterday morning on behalf of the Sri Lanka Government Minister Douglas Devananda and Jaffna Security Forces Commander Major General G.A. Chandrasiri handed over the consignment of the food items to K.Ganesh, Government Agent, Jaffna, for distribution among the civil population in the Jaffna Peninsula.

Reports revealed that unloading of the 200 MT of potatoes has been completed and arrangements are made to distribute them from today through MPCSs.

Point Pedro port sources told “Asian Tribune” that by Sunday consignments in the ship would be completely unloaded.

It is learnt that a decision to send the ship again to India would be finalized today after government analyzing the food situation in peninsula carefully.

In the meantime, a Tamil MP recently brought about 500 Kg of potatoes and sold it in Jaffna at Rs.1000 per kg. It is learnt that the MP obtained permission from the Government to bring potatoes stating that they are needed for the free distribution of food in a Hindu Temple at Karainagar for the fulfillment of a vow to the deity.
