DMK celebrates victory, Congress hopes for a berth in the govt

By M Rama Rao in New Delhi reporting for Asian Tribune

New Delhi, 11 May, ( Muthavel Karunanidhi drove to his DMK party office 'Anna Arivalayam' at the Anna Salai even as the early trends were coming and that was signal for his faithful to herald victory celebrations. In the not too far away Poes Garden residence of Amma Jayalalithaa, the mood was anything that was remotely close to exuberance. For the first time in years, brusqueness replaced humility for the gate man. Jayalalithaa has retired for "rest" at her Siruthavoor farm house near Mahabalipuran since the elections on May 8.

Right from the word go, trends in counting indicated that Kalingnar Karunanidhi-led Dravida Munnetra Kazgham (DMK) has headed for a comfortable majority in the 234-member Assembly with the DMK emerging as the single largest party.

Shortly around noon, the DMK established lead in 89 seats; and with allies in as many as 150 seats - Congress in 30 seats, PMK in 18, CPI in seven and the CPI in five seats. A senior Congress leader Ashwini Kumar, a Federal Minister, speaking for himself said, the Congress will be happy to join the new TN government.

The outgoing single party ruler, AIADMK was leading only in 80 seats; its allies MDMK in nine and DPA in just two seats.

Actor Vijayakant party, Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK), the wrecker of Jaya's come back dreams was ahead in four seats.

Karunanidhi was placed comfortably in his home ground, Chepauk.

His workers gathered outside the Secretariat and burst crackers and raised slogans.

"After so much hard work one obviously wants good results. It won't just be personal victory," Karunanidhi's daughter, Kanimozhi, said.

Karunanidhi's son M K Stalin said "He (Karunanidhi) will be the chief minister 100 per cent. Where is the doubt?". He said the alliance victory was expected.

Karunanidhi also thanked the people for 'voting (the DPA) to power'. Visibly jubilant, Karunanidhi told a television channel that he is happy with the trends, which indicate that the DPA will gain a victory. "My thanks to all the people who voted for the DPA, the alliance party leaders and volunteers of the DMK and other allies, who worked hard for the victory of the DPA".

Significantly, the DPA constituent, Pattali Makkal Katchi was not doing well in its stronghold of north Tamil Nadu, giving solace to the AIADMK. Most of the AIADMK's leads were from this region. Most of the gains of the DMK were from the AIADMK's stronghold of southern Tamil Nadu.

Jayalalithaa has won from her constituency Andipatti but she refused to comment on the DMK's sweep. "I do not want to make further comments until the results are out," she said. Her trusted aide and AIADMK spokesman Maitreyan has refused to go by trends. "It's only initial leads and we will wait for the full results. We are still hopeful", he said.
