'Political solution to end war in next two- months' – Minister de Silva

By Vandana Jayasinghe - Reporting from Colombo

Colombo, 15 January, (Asiantribune.com): The government chief negotiator and Minister of Health Nimal Siripala de Silva said to the Italian State Minister for Foreign Affairs Gianni Vernetti that the government would bring a political solution to the North and East problem within next two- months.

He said that the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by the two major political parties – United National Party and the Sri Lanka Freedom Party – would help to get the required mandate from the majority of people of the country to find a lasting solution for the North and East issue.

Minister de Silva explained the Minister Vernetti, that 90 percent of the people of this country belong to these two political parties and the new proposals to resolve the national question would depend on their mandate. "The government hope that the other political parties like Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna and Jathika Hela Urumaya would join the government to find a fair solution to end terrorism," he added.

He appreciated the assistance given by the Italian government after the tsunami disaster. "Some organizations pledged to help Sri Lanka in the wake of the tsunami disaster, but after some times, they dried out. But the Italian government kept the promise and implemented some of the projects to help tsunami victims," Minister de Silva said. Later Minister Vernetti had a tour to tsunami projects in South funded by the Italian Government.

Meanwhile, Minister Vernetti addressing the media before departure stressed the need of resuming peace talks immediately. He also said that it was high time to commence negotiations as the conflict in the North and East had been dragging for many years and killing too many lives.

He said that Italy was working with other countries like Canada and USA to stop LTTE fund raising. "The Italian government would continue to track down fund raising of all terrorist organizations including the LTTE," he said.

Minister Vernetti who met President Mahinda Rajapaksa had discussions with the Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe, Human Rights and Natural Disaster Management Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe, and TNA leader R. Sampanthan.
