Sri Lankan rebels take civilian hospital hostage in Batticaloa

Munza Mushtaq – Reporting from Colombo

Colombo, 18 January, (Asiantribune.com): The Tamil Tiger rebels in a desperate move to treat their inured following Tuesday's heavy defeat in Batticaloa's Panichchankerni and Kadjuwatta, is reported to have taken the Vakarai hospital hostage,
civilians in the area alleged.

A spokesman attached to the media centre for national security (MCNS) told the "Asian Tribune" that, when a large group of civilians living in that area had visited the hospital on Wednesday morning they had witnessed a large number of LTTE cadres present and had been informed that the LTTE cadres have forcibly taken over the hospital to treat their injured cadres thereby depriving the ill civilians from receiving treatment from the hospital.

However the centre spokesman added that the MCNS could not independently verify the claims made by the civilians and they too had to go buy what the civilians claimed. According to the claims, there appeared to be more than 30 to 40 LTTE cadres receiving treatment at the hospital.

Accordingly, at the time this report was filed, the Vakarai hospital still continued to be under 'LTTE hostage'.
