Sena Peiris said obtaining of ISO certifications are costly business, but Cleaner production helps to reduce waste, increase efficiency and productivity.

Most of industries face lack of Cleaner Production officials, due to heavy demand on their profession. The NCPC is a project of UNIDO’s Integrated Industrial Support programme, funded by Government of Norway and Owned by Ministry of Industrial
Development. The centre improves efficiency of natural resource use, maintaining and enhancing environment quality, Improving living standards and poverty alleviation and achieving sustainable development.

Responding to quarries made by the media, he said the centre charges a nominal fee to assist the industries, but small-scale industrialists receive a free service from the NCPC.

"We want to charge from the large-scale industries," he explained.

The CP consultants visit each industry and help them to do eco-office audits, assessments, awareness and training, troubleshooting and support for industry to face the challenges from environment.

The centre hopes to continue its plans such as expand its services for the rural industry & trade CP promotion at regional level, setting up CP cells at regional level in association with Chambers, strengthening the links with bridging & industry support organizations at regional level.

Mr.Peiris said obtaining of ISO certifications are costly business, but Cleaner production helps to reduce waste, increase efficiency and productivity. Most of industries release waste to the environment and it will pollute environment. This action will raise public protests, legal actions against the industry and also face lowering of income of the business.

On the other hand, if you decide to abide by the law and treat the waste before it is released, then it will cost you a large sum of money, which will not generate any income in return. Homes and factories are run very inefficiently, consuming large amounts of raw
material and generating large quantities of waste. "Waste is one of our incomes," he explained.

Cleaner production is not a new concept to Sri Lanka. It has been practiced by our forefathers and had been a way of life in the past. It is considered the most logical way of running a home, an industry or and business organization CP is about making more
efficient use of materials, energy, water and other natural resources when operating a business regardless of whether the business is in processing, manufacturing, service, transport, mining and agriculture.

You can start the CP at your home, he said. However he said the CP targets all business people including industrialists. It is aimed at Owners, Chief Executive Officers, Managing Directors, Finance Managers and other Corporate Officers in business organizations, who are in apposition to make decisions on purchase of raw material, product design, process, maintenance of equipment etc. CP gives benefits to Small and Medium Scale Entrepreneurs and also addresses Bankers, Insurers and other who could influence their clients.

If an industry follows CP, all workers including top management would support this effort to obtain results, he said.
