Sonia registers landslide victory in Rae Barelli

By M Rama Rao in New Delhi reporting for Asian Tribune

New Delhi, 11 May (Asiantribune.com): Sonia Gandhi has won her Rae Barelli seat once again. Victory margin: a whopping 4, 17, 888 votes. All her rivals lost their deposits.

One of them is Raj Kumar Chaudhary the nephew of a minister in the Samajwadi party government in the state. Neither BJP, which fielded a reluctant Vinay Katiyar who had shot into fame as a leader of Hindutva forces a decade back, nor Apna Dal candidate Prabha Singh Lodhi, the nominee of BJP rebel Uma Bharti who has floated Apna Dal could with stand the Sonia tornado.

Sonia's daughter Priyanka Vadra, who was the election agent while
brother Rahul managed the campaign, complimented the electorate for re-electing her mother and thus standing by her once again. She also complimented Rahul Gandhi as the frontline campaigner, and said he has a long innings in politics.

"He (Rahul) will be in politics for many years. He will face many
tests," said Priyanka when asked whether the Rae Bareli campaign was a litmus test for her brother. "He has done lot of hard work in Rae Bareli," she said. Asked about the margin of victory, Priyanka said:

"Margin is like a ego trip for me. It does not have any value. When we do well, we do well. For others a margin of 50,000 is a great thing."

In reply to a query, she said "this election was different because a lot of voters have not been given a chance to vote in 50-150 polling booths." She has complained to the Election Commission about this.

The election to Rae Bareli Lok Sabha seat followed Sonia Gandhi's
resignation in the wake of the office of profit issue.
