FTA between Pak, ASEAN to boost trade, economic ties: Kasuri

By Iqbal Hussain Khan Yousafzai - Reporting from Islamabad

Islamabad, 06 June, (Asiantribune.com): Pakistani Foreign Minister Khurshid Mahmood Kasuri has highlighted the need for Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Pakistan and Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) for further enhancement of bilateral trade and economic ties.

Addressing the inaugural session of ‘ASEAN Joint Sectoral Cooperation Committee’ here on Monday, Mr. Kasuri said that 710 million people would gain economic advantages of a free trade pact between Pakistan and ASEAN member countries.

Pakistan would provide one million dollars in Asean fund, which would be utilized for construction of infrastructure and joint investment in telecommunication, oil and gas, agriculture and IT sectors.

Kasuri said that Pakistan has a vital role for swift regional development and due to its geographic location it is a bridge between Middle East, Central Asia and Far East.

Pakistan will play a key role in gas supply to India and China from Iran, Qatar, and Turkmenistan, he added.
