By Munza Mushtaq – Reporting from Colombo for Asian Tribune

Colombo, 07 June, (Asiantribune.com): Commissioner General of Prisons, retired Major General Vajira Wijegunawardana will dispatch a special team to investigate the escape of eight prisoners from the Batticaloa prison on Monday, the escapees included seven Tiger cadres.

The incident had occurred on Monday morning when prison guards had
gone to serve the meals to these prisoners. It is learnt that one of these LTTE cadres had pointed a pistol at a prison guard and had escaped.

A vehicle was reportedly at standby to which these prisoners got in and fled, it was reported.

"Investigations will also be conducted to verify whether the escapees were assisted from within the prison premises," sources told the “Asian Tribune.”

Although at the time of the incident, none of the prison guards were armed with weapons, it was surprising that no other prison officers had been able to stop this incident, sources noted.

In the meantime Deputy Jailor Santhiampillai Santhirakumar and prison guards Ethirmannasingham Jegajothy, and Suntharalingham Sivananthan were produced before NSM Ajmeer Batticalao r on charges of assisting the prisoners to escape.

The Magistrate released them on bail and ordered the police to file the charge sheet against them on 21 August.
