Senior Sri Lankan Minister explodes against Muslim Congress Leader

By Munza Mushtaq -- Reporting from Colombo for Asian Tribune

Colombo, 08 June, (Asiantribune,Com):Senior Muslim Minister A.H.M. Fowzie who has expressed his outright opposition against plans by the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) to join the Government has lashed out against the SLMC and its leader Rauff Hakeem calling them 'bankrupt' and 'in desperate need of power'.

Fowzie, a senior Sri Lanka Freedom Party stalwart and holding four Ministerial portfolios including Transport and Petroleum charged that Hakeem had always had a knack for jumping from one party to another which ever was in power.

"Hakeem is not joining the Government to help it, he is doing this because he doesn't have anyone with him now so he is trying to join the Government to become 'powerful and important' and thereby improve his party base," the Minister told the Asian Tribune.

Mr. Fowzie also charged that Hakeem was only good at demanding powerful ministerial portfolios but has failed to do anything positive for the Muslim community. "He is not a Muslim leader but is a mere leader of a Muslim party. When he was a Minister in the United National Party administration he was only worried about preserving his portfolio, and so he sidelined issues faced by the Muslims. But today he is demanding the government to do this, that and the other," he alleged.

"What was Rauff Hakeem doing when thousands of Muslims were evicted from their homes, he was only worried about safeguarding his portfolio and not the rights of his community," he claimed.

The Minister emphasised that he was not the only person within the Government who had vehemently opposed the SLMC joining the Government but even all of the SLMC breakaway factions who left the party due to the poor leadership of Hakeem had voice disapproval against such a tie up.

"The breakaway groups know that when Hakeem joins the Government he will misuse his powers and put them to the road," Minister Fowzie charged.
