15 LTTE cadres believed to be killed in a Karuna’s attack

Colombo, 08 June, (Asiantribune.com): Fifteen Tiger guerrillas are killed in an attack believed to be carried out by the cadres loyal to former LTTE Eastern commander Vinayagamoorthy Muralitharan alias Karuna on three LTTE bunkers in Periyapalam, South of Trincomalee, intelligence sources said.

Three LTTE observation points in uncleared area had come under the attack by the Karuna group at 1.30 am today.

Twenty Tiger guerrillas were believed to be in side the three points which came under Rocket Propel Grenade (RPG) and small arms fire.

“We intercepted LTTE transmissions saying 15 LTTE cadres were killed and five injured,” said a military official.

LTTE positions have come under attack while the most cadres were fast asleep, according to the intercepted LTTE transmissions.

The death toll or the attack could not be independently verified. However, the LTTE positions in the East, especially in Trincomalee came under attack in the past few weeks.

Meanwhile two soldiers were injured in a mortar attack on the Kiran Bridge camp, Batticaloa this morning.

Military spokesman Brigadier Prasad Samarasinghe said the troops retaliated with mortars and artillery. Confrontation lasted 30 minutes.

Casualties of the Tiger guerrillas are now known.
