Death of Abu Musab A Zaqawi – The most wanted Terrorist

Baghdad, 08 June, (Asiantribune.com):Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the al-Qaida leader in Iraq who waged a bloody campaign of suicide bombings and beheadings of hostages, has been killed in a precision airstrike, U.S. and Iraqi officials said Thursday. It was a long-sought victory in the war in Iraq.

In London this morning Margaret Beckett, the British Foreign Secretary leaving Cabinet commented on the death of Abu Musab Al Zarqawi:

'I think the thing that is really important is that one of the most damaging and undermining things of recent weeks and months has been the inter-community conflict in Iraq and Zarqawi does seem to have been a prime mover and encourager of that conflict.

And so if he's been taken out of the equation that should be helpful to the Iraqi people as well as to the Iraqi government. And I certainly hope it will be'.

Mrs Beckett:I have no more details than you will have already heard, but I think the thing that is really important is that one of the most damaging and undermining things of recent weeks and months has been the inter-community conflict in Iraq and Zarqawi does seem to have been a prime mover and encourager of that conflict. And so if he's been taken out of the equation that should be helpful to the Iraqi people as well as to the Iraqi government. And I certainly hope it will be.

Question:Mrs Beckett, you say if, how uncertain or certain are you that this is in fact Zarqawi?

Mrs Beckett:I haven't had chance to be briefed about more of the details of how this operation took place, but certainly it's very clear that the Iraqi government believe that this is what has happened.

Question: And you said that you felt that he, as an Al Qaeda terrorist, was responsible for stirring up the sectarian conflict and others have seen these as really two separate things: an insurgency and a civil war. What's your evidence that he was?

Mrs Beckett: If you remember quite recently there had been a number of announcements by Zarqawi encouraging action against people of a different strand within the Muslim community, a different approach to the Muslim faith and that, it seems, was immensely damaging in itself and if that has been diminished by his removal then that can only be good for the future.
