"Federal system" is the best way to tame the Tigers and avoid separatism -- Anandasangaree

London, 31 March, (Asiantribune.com): V.Anandasangaree, leader of the Tamil United Liberation Front, told the Asian Tribune that the unitary system of Government that has prevailed since 1948 -- the year of independence -- has failed to bring about unity and national integration in the country.V.Anandasangaree defined that a true “Patriot” as a person who loves the country and its people and, not the one who loves his country and his people.V.Anandasangaree defined that a true “Patriot” as a person who loves the country and its people and, not the one who loves his country and his people.

"A federal system of Government in Sri Lanka will prevent separation and promote unity in the country. But under a unitary system the country will never be in peace and tendency for separation will continue" he added.

He argued: "Under the Unitary system which has been there for the last fifty years and more, thousands have been killed and millions internally displaced and there will be the threat of separation.

"Therefore, after so much of loss of lives, damages and destruction to property it would be very unfair to expect the minorities to accept less than a federal solution," he said.

Anandasangaree speaking to “Asian Tribune” said that the Sri Lanka Government must come up soon with a proposal which should be acceptable as a reasonable one by the international community which in turn must be guaranteed to the minorities in Sri Lanka.

“The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Elam in turn also must accept it and international community must exert pressure for their acceptance," he said. He added: "If in case LTTE refuses to fall in line, then the international community need not be told what should be done to tame them. On this issue, the international community should have to get together and through the imposition of various sanctions must come forward to compel the LTTE."

Anandasangaree reminded that the Government cannot expect the international community to continue to take the same stance without ant reciprocal action forthcoming from the Government of Sri Lanka.

He further underlined that as far as the proposals for a reasonable solution is concerned the Government should reject the thinking that there are various communities in this country, but only one and all should be treated alike in all respect.

Previous successive Governments would have solved this problem in relation to the issues that country faces today long long ago, if the Governments had not given into the pressures of a section of the majority community, in spite of the fact that the majority community was always for a reasonable solution, Anandasangaree pointed out .

He added that ethnic issues would have been solved long ago if the rulers are patriotic enough to consider all the Sri Lankans as one nation.

He reminded that patriotism is loving the country and its people and not a section of the people.

Anandasangaree defined that a true “Patriot” as a person who loves the country and its people and, not the one who loves his country and his people.
