Iran to support territorial integrity of Sri Lanka

Colombo, 30 May, (Asiantribune.com): Iran will support and endeavor to ensure the territorial integrity of Sri Lanka while working for a lasting solution. Dr. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad President of the Islamic Republic of Iran said that there are many areas both Sri Lank and Iran could cooperate more closely.

Last Monday Sri lanka’s Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama met Iranin President at his office in Tehran.

According to a statement released by Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, “President of the Islamic Republic of Iran Dr. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad told the visiting Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama that he is looking forward to the forthcoming visit of the President Mahinda Rajapaksa in order to implement very early the will of the two presidents and hence this visit of the Sri Lankan Foreign Minister is an important step in this regard.”

The Statement further added, “The Iranian President said there are many areas in which both countries can cooperate more closely and Iran is willing to support Sri Lanka's endeavors to ensure the territorial integrity of Sri Lanka while working for a lasting solution to the Sri Lanka’s conflict.”

“Foreign Minister Bogollagama called on the Iranian President on Monday, 28th May during his 3 day official visit to the Islamic Republic of Iran at the President's Office. Foreign Minister was accompanied by Mr. A.H.M. Fowzie, Minister of Petroleum and Petroleum Resources Development of Sri Lanka, M.M. Zuhair, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the Islamic Republic of Iran, Mr. I. Ansar, Director General (Middle East & Africa) Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Dhakshita Bogollagama, Private Secretary to Foreign Minister and Mr. Asoka Rajapakse of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Iranian Foreign Minister Monuchcher Mottaki and other senior officials of Iranian government were associated with the Iranian President during the discussion.
